Violence against women and girls (VAWG) takes many forms and is endemic throughout Africa and much of the world. In response to this situation, in 2008 UN Secretary- General, Ban Ki-moon, established the UNiTE Campaign to end this violence. UN Women took the lead in Africa with the Africa-UNiTE Campaign. Africa-Unite’s goals are to: ensure that national laws are in place and enforced; promote adoption of national plans; institutionalize data collection; launch campaigns; address sexual violence in conflict situations; and promote the creation of safe public spaces for women and girls. UN Women contracted with the Population Council to establish a baseline measure to evaluate this campaign and provide information to help program the campaign’s priorities, resources and activities.
