Men who have Sex with Men (MSM)

Sex between men accounts between 5 and 10% of global HIV infections.

Potential for rapid HIV transmission among MSM, especially when rate of unprotected anal intercourse is high.

Same sex practice is the main responsible of most HIV transmission in many developed countries.

Very high vulnerability of MSM to HIV infection in countries where same sex practice is criminalized, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Coverage of prevention among MSM still low: only 40% of MSM have access to HIV prevention and care services they need.

Our strategies:

  • Encourage MSM to use sexual health facilities and welfare agencies without any fear
  • Encourage consistent and proper use of condoms and water-based lubricants
  • Encourage voluntary counselling and testing
  • Provide information on risk reduction strategies to meet the needs of MSM
  • Promote specific policy measures to make prevention, care and support available for MSM
  • Advocate with governments to include such measures in national HIV programming and funding priorities
  • Promote the implementation of legal and policy reforms that led to easy access to health services for MSM among other vulnerable groups
